Brett Phillips
Chief Business Development Officer
Brett is a lifelong entrepreneur and a social chameleon with a unique ability to work with and befriend anyone. In large part, this is because Brett was born and raised as an Army Brat and often answers “America” as his hometown. After high school, Brett attended West Point for two years, where he excelled as a soldier and a student but found that cadet life was not the right fit. After deciding to leave, he quickly obtained his BA in Philosophy from Wichita State University and then earned his JD & MBA from Drake University.
After graduation, Brett moved to Denver, where he spent a year practicing Family Law before realizing that his interests and skills were better suited for business and technology. He then specialized in successfully introducing foreign products into the American market, working with a Canadian hardware company and an Australian SaaS company to expand their reach in the U.S. market.
Following this, Brett founded his own technology company, specializing in building Discord bots and enterprise software solutions. Through this venture, he raised a total of $3M in funding, built and managed an international team of 12, developed and deployed six tech products, navigated the acquisition of multiple tech platforms worth over $6M, and secured major enterprise clients such as the U.S. Army, Twitch Rivals, and Sacramento State University.
In early 2022, Brett joined House of Tangram as Chief Innovation Officer and In-House Counsel, where he played a pivotal role in legal, technology, and business strategy. During his tenure, he managed all legal affairs, including contract lifecycle management, litigation, vendor relationships, and HR matters. He also implemented and managed enterprise IT systems, ensuring operational efficiency across all departments. Brett sourced, negotiated, and piloted the acquisition of a $5M advertising platform, drafted and executed multi-million-dollar investment vehicles, and structured high-profile partnerships with Amazon, Makr Shakr, Virdee, and others. His expertise in business negotiations was also instrumental in securing a market-leading lease agreement with an international retail giant, incorporating innovative revenue-sharing mechanisms. Additionally, he helped design and architect new tech stacks and business models that transformed traditional hospitality cost centers into profitable revenue streams.
Now, as Chief Development Officer at Hellbender, Brett applies his extensive experience in technology, business strategy, and legal infrastructure to drive Hellbender’s mission in AI-powered perception systems. His role focuses on expanding strategic partnerships, scaling business operations, and positioning Hellbender as the global leader in mission-critical AI hardware and software infrastructure.
Outside of his professional career, Brett is a husband, father of three, basketball fanatic, and a licensed attorney in the District of Columbia.
